“This was the second practice we had built, so I looked back on [the first one] and elaborated on the strongest features while discarding the unwanted attributes,” Darnell said. “I was confident about the technology and specific layout I wanted for the office, and therefore was able to reconcile with my Patterson team to create a plan of how to achieve even greater success.”
The Darnells’ vision revolved around an open floor plan, with the reception area located near the highly visible, state-of-the-art sterilization center at the heart of the practice. “We feel it’s important to conduct a tour of the office with each of our new patients,” Darnell said. “We share general information about our customized sterilization units, letting patients observe how immaculate and sanitary they are. I think when patients understand the care we take within that flawless center unit of our practice, it is a direct reflection of what we do in the operatories as well.”

The new office opened in August 2014 and exudes an immaculately hygienic and professional appearance. “Southlake is a very high-income-level community,” Carlson said, “and Darnell Dentistry exemplifies this standard. Each of the operatories are roomy and dual-entry. Dr. Darnell employs all A-dec equipment and upscale products - everything looks first class.”
Commitment to excellence
For Patterson Dental Territory Representative Duffy Slade, Darnell’s understanding of how technology improves his practice was critical. The pair sat down to discuss the technologies the doctor wanted to incorporate. “Many new offices will cut corners - in material or equipment,” Slade said. “Dr. Darnell, however, incorporated quality equipment in every room and completely integrated his technology throughout the practice.”
Darnell brought only one piece of equipment with him from New Mexico: his CEREC system. He added a digital Orthophos XG 3D cone beam scanner, making fully guided surgeries for every implant placement accessible, not to mention limiting patients’ X-ray exposure and eliminating the need to keep chemicals in the office that could be hazardous to employees.
“The XG 3D and CEREC are a substantial part of his plan to successfully execute same-day procedures,” said Carlson. “The lab is oversized, because the doctor enjoys using his CEREC and customizing his crowns.”
