Though Dr. Todd was ready to branch out on his own, the decision to leave his father’s practice was also bittersweet. “It was a very hard decision,” he said. “I’m very close to my dad.”

Dr. Todd contemplated joining an existing practice in Birmingham, but knew that building his own office would give him the freedom he and his family needed. Because he had worked with Patterson Dental at his father’s practice, he did not hesitate to contact the Birmingham Branch for assistance with his new office.
Patterson Dental Equipment Specialist Randal Barnett was the doctor’s first point of contact at the branch. “That was the beginning of a great relationship and the start of a long journey to make his dream come true,” Barnett said.
Dr. Todd and his wife, Melissa, began their search for the new practice’s location. They found a lot on the former Chace Lake Country Club in Hoover, Ala., that was perfect for their needs. In a new development and accessible by several interstates, the location had the right demographics to succeed. Barnett had also been eyeing the location and agreed that it was the perfect spot for the couple’s new venture.
The doctor continued to practice in Enterprise during the construction and install of his office. Weekend trips to Birmingham to visit family doubled as planning sessions with his Patterson team. Though the long-distance planning was challenging at first, Dr. Todd and Patterson worked together to keep the project on track.
A-dec All the Way
When it came time to select the equipment for his practice, Dr. Todd knew exactly what he wanted: A-dec. He had been working with A-dec equipment in his father’s practice for more than 10 years and appreciated its quality and functionality. During an A-dec Educational Experience at A-dec’s Newberg, Ore., facility, Dr. Todd explored the latest features and designed the equipment for his new operatories.
Though he was used to working in a practice with film X-ray and no computers in the operatories, Dr. Todd knew he wanted to use digital in his new practice. He selected Schick digital sensors and a PLANMECA ProOne Digital Pan for his imaging needs.
