“Of all the things I switched, that has been my favorite change,” said Dr. Todd. “Patients understand why I am telling them they need a procedure and it has increased their trust.” Dr. Todd and his staff are also pleased with the increase in productivity they have seen with Eaglesoft practice management software and computers in all of the operatories.

Dr. Todd wanted to bring CEREC into the practice, but he was reluctant to make the investment. Melissa encouraged him to go for it. “She said, ‘We are catering to people in a large metro area. You need something to help you market the practice and give you an edge,’” Dr. Todd said. He is grateful that she encouraged him to take the leap. “I’m more impressed with CEREC every day and my patients have been amazed by the technology.”
Blending Old and New
Dr. Todd and Melissa had a strong vision for the practice’s décor. They wanted it to look like a rustic and cozy ski chalet. Working with an interior designer, architect and Melissa’s father and uncle, who own a construction company, they were able to create the office of their dreams.
The office’s interior design is unlike any other dental practice in the area. When Birmingham residents drive past the elegant stone building that resembles a home on an alpine ski slope, they are surprised that it is a dental practice.
The reception area has a vaulted 25-foot ceiling with a dramatic floor-to-ceiling dry stone fireplace. The reception desk is constructed from stacked stone and topped with a granite counter top. Mahogany-colored leather chairs and couches provide a comfortable place for patients to relax and unwind before their appointments. Throughout the office hang interesting photos of Birmingham taken by Melissa’s sister, a local photographer and the practice’s office manager.
Walls constructed of heart of pine that was salvaged from a building in Enterprise separate the operatories. Rather than cover the cement floors, Dr. Todd opted to stain them in a rich espresso tone. “When you’re here, you think you’re anywhere but the dentist,” he said.
Barnett has never seen another dental office like it. “It is quite a unique design blending new and old,” he said.
